About Sandra

Sandra is a German Ceramist based in London, she creates little scenes from her inner world and brings them to life through her intricate style, and microscopic levels of detail.

She focuses on the traditional aspects of German village life, merging her lived experience with her deep imagination, and creates meaningful pieces inspired by special memories with her grandparents in their village. She would bake cakes with her Oma in their kitchen, and watch her Opa carve little wooden sculptures which he filled the cottage with.

Next to the village there was a forest, where Sandra would often collect mushrooms in, and imagine little fairies wearing raspberry hats hiding in the trees; and forest animals having secret homes in burrows, with a cozy bed, a little wooden table, a fireplace and a stove. Her memories in her grandparents' village inform most of her works, creating a deep and personal source of inspiration for her.

She is also inspired by summers in Greece in later years, as well as the locals who reside on the island; the Mykonian fishermen with leathery skin and big white beards, her beloved friends who love to dance in town till the morning, the old men playing instruments in tavernas while drinking wine and eating lambchops, and the French artist who lives in a studio that looks like a cave, with his hundred of cats, tens of chickens, and a donkey. It is these people that give the island its undeniable magic, and offer a piece of their magic to the ceramics which they inspired.
